Liberals stand by while credit card companies gouge Canadians
Canada's NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:
“Starting today, the credit card fees that businesses pay can now be passed along to people. At a time when the cost of living is so high and people are already struggling to afford the things they need, this increase in prices will make things harder.
It isn't small businesses who are to blame. They've struggled to keep their doors open through years of a pandemic and the economic fallout that continues to hurt them and their workers. It's the Liberal government who has allowed credit card companies to make huge profits with high merchant fees, instead of defending hard working Canadians.
For years, New Democrats have been calling on the government to step in to help small business owners by putting in place a cap of one per cent on all merchant fees that credit card companies are charging.
Now that Canadian consumers are also shouldering this cost, it’s more important than ever for the Liberal government to take action.
Credit card companies are doing just fine; it’s hardworking Canadians who need the government to step up. While the Liberals and Conservatives do nothing to stand up to huge corporations and rich CEOs, New Democrats are fighting to make like more affordable for Canadian workers and their families.”
