Liberals need to do more to protect Canadians and the environment from toxic substances

NDP critic for the environment, Laurel Collins, made the following statement on the newly tabled Bill S-5:

"Canadians are concerned about the effects that toxic chemicals in the products they use have on their health and the environment. They expect their government to take action to protect them from toxic substances and recognize the right for all people to a healthy environment.

The Liberals have made a lot of empty promises about protecting the environment and fighting climate change. But when it comes down to it, they fail to act.

As with the previous iteration of this legislation, we remain concerned about the Liberals' commitment to protecting the environment. The bill has limitations on the right for Canadians to have a healthy environment, and there are significant loopholes and weaknesses that are of serious concern. In addition, we are concerned that this bill will allow government to make politically motivated decisions that override the scientific evidence when it comes to dangerous substances. If we actually want to protect the environment, we must follow the advice of scientists and environmental experts - not the advice of big corporations.

New Democrats will be fighting to get results for Canadians by strengthening this bill and ensuring that Canadians can enjoy safe products and a healthy environment for generations to come."
