Liberals could do more to support Europe through their energy crisis
NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Heather McPherson made the following statement:
"We welcome Chancellor Scholz’s visit to Canada, particularly in light of our shared efforts to support Ukraine, provide refuge for those fleeing conflict and transition to clean energy.
As Russia continues to hold Europe hostage by using energy as a weapon, Germany is making bold investments to transition off of fossil fuels. It is no surprise they’re looking to allies such as Canada to get through this challenging time. New Democrats know that Canada must be a partner in clean energy projects – it’s imperative not only to deal with the climate crisis but also to support our allies across the world.
Canadians expect our government to be a climate leader on the world stage. While the Liberal government may talk about their clean energy transition, they continue to provide fossil fuel subsidies and invest billions in a pipeline that will never be profitable. Canada is now behind on meeting our emission targets due to the Liberal government's inaction in providing green energy alternatives.
It’s important for Canada to collaborate with our allies in fighting the climate emergency. Beyond hydrogen energy projects, the Liberal government could help deploy heat pumps in Europe, increasing the energy efficiency of building heating and reducing gas demand.
To be taken seriously by our allies, the Liberal government must stop subsiding the oil and gas industry and keep its promise of capping emissions. We need to show our allies our commitment to fighting the climate emergency through action, not just words.”
