Liberal inaction is hurting Canadian workers: NDP

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and the NDP critic for auto strategy, Brian Masse, made the following joint statement:

“The convoys, which have spread across the country, are hurting everyday Canadians who are just trying to do their jobs. What people are going through is completely unacceptable. Healthcare workers are being intimidated, small business owners and retail workers have been harassed and assaulted. Thousands of workers have been forced to stay home from their jobs which makes it harder for them to feed their families and pay their rent. Now, auto workers in Ontario are also missing work because of major supply chain disruptions caused by the convoys at the Windsor border, which is strictly a federal responsibility.

Although this convoy has gone on for two weeks, the Prime Minister has spent more time looking for excuses than looking into solutions. The solutions are not simple, but Canadians rightly expect their Prime Minister to show leadership and provide a way forward during a national crisis.

We are reiterating our call for the Prime Minister to do everything possible to help municipalities under siege by the convoy, get out of it.

Justin Trudeau also needs to get in touch with the U.S. administration to shut down the funding coming from the U.S. that is interfering in our democracy. While the Liberals point fingers at other levels of government and hide behind jurisdiction, New Democrats are working on solutions to foreign interference. We're pushing for accountability from online platforms like GoFundMe and GiveSaveGo that have allowed American money to pour over the border and fund these occupations. And, later today, we're calling for the American ambassador to explain to elected officials what more could be done to stop right-wing groups in the US from funding these protests that are hurting Canadian workers.

Canadians have been through so much in the last two years. They have made sacrifices to stay safe and they deserve better than an absentee Prime Minister."
