Justin Trudeau turns his back on Canadians who need help (again)

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement:

“Today Justin Trudeau announced he is cutting help for people in the middle of a fourth wave of COVID-19. He has the power to extend these benefits to the end of November, but has instead chosen to give the people depending on these benefits only a few days notice. It's unacceptable. The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, and the fourth wave is hitting hard in Alberta, Saskatchewan and in the Northwest Territories. This is clearly not the time to cut help for families and small businesses who are struggling to make ends meet.

During the election campaign, Justin Trudeau said that he would have Canadians’ back in this difficult time — for as long as needed. But today he has broken that promise. Without any details about new programs or long-needed Employment Insurance reforms, the Liberal government is walking away from Canadians in need.

Meanwhile, the Liberals are finding ways to continue flowing money to large corporations. Canadians deserve a government that works for them, not the ultra-rich who have benefited from this pandemic.

New Democrats urge the Liberals to reconvene the House of Commons earlier than November 22 so Members of Parliament can get back to work and reverse this devastating decision to take support away from people who need it.

The CRB must continue for as long as we are in a pandemic which will also give the government time to fix the critical gaps in our Employment Insurance system to make sure people aren’t left to fend for themselves.

Canadians can count on New Democrats to fight for them."
