Justin Trudeau needs to prove to Canadians that they can trust him: NDP

BURNABY – Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh spoke to Justin Trudeau about Canadians’ expectations of their government. Singh stressed that the Liberal leader has to back up his promises with concrete actions that get people the support they need.

"In the next three weeks, the Prime Minister has opportunities to show Canadians that he means what he says and prove that he's actually going to deliver help for people,” said Singh. “Canadians expect Justin Trudeau is to start delivering on his commitments on reconciliation, climate change and helping people get by.”

Singh says the Prime Minister can start by dropping the legal challenges against the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal rulings to compensate Indigenous children and their families. In addition to stopping the court cases against Indigenous kids, Singh wants to see the Prime Minister continue pandemic supports for Canadians, deliver on tackling the climate crisis and help to address the urgent staffing shortages in the health care system.

“People still really need help,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau has an opportunity to show Canadians he really does have their backs by continuing the pandemic supports for Canadian workers and small businesses—and stopping the clawback of GIS supports seniors really need,” said Singh. “This isn’t the time to cut help for people.”

Next week world leaders are gathering for COP and New Democrats say this is an opportunity for Justin Trudeau to prove he's serious about fighting climate change.

“Justin Trudeau can finally start showing leadership on the climate crisis and can get Canada back on track by committing to an emissions reduction target of at least 50 per cent, eliminating fossil fuel subsidies and supporting workers and communities that are impacted by the fight against climate change,” said Singh. “But that isn't the only crisis that needs immediate action–we are in an alarming nursing and health care staff shortage. I’ll be pushing the Prime Minister to act immediately by providing funding for provinces and territories to take urgent steps while we work on long-term solutions."

“I'm urging Justin Trudeau to take these concrete steps now to show Canadians his government is ready to act on the urgent priorities raised in the election campaign,” added Singh.

Singh also raised the drinking water crisis that is affecting Iqaluit and urged the Prime Minister to provide the mobile water treatment centre that has been requested by the Government of Nunavut.
