Justin Trudeau claims to be a climate leader, but his track record shows otherwise

OTTAWA – Today, Justin Trudeau is at the United Nations General Assembly claiming to be a climate leader – but his track record shows otherwise. People are extremely worried about the worsening climate emergency, and after seven years of Liberal inaction Canadians are increasingly anxious about the future.

“Canadians are struggling with extreme heatwaves, flooding and weather events that have devastated their livelihoods and infrastructure,” said NDP Environment and Climate Change Critic Laurel Collins. “Instead of showing the climate leadership that Canadians expect of him, the Prime Minister bought a pipeline, failed to cap emissions from profitable oil and gas companies and continues to give billions of dollars in subsidies to big oil and gas. These are not the actions of a leader who takes climate change seriously.”

For seven years, the Liberals have said all the right things about meeting climate targets, fighting the climate crisis and encouraging a green economy but they aren’t taking action. Meanwhile, energy workers continue to be left in limbo, unsure of what their role in a clean, green future will be.

Instead of using the last seven years to create and deliver a strong plan to protect workers and the environment, this Liberal government has shovelled billions of dollars into a pipeline and put money back into the pockets of rich CEOs – all while voting against real climate solutions.

“New Democrats know that fighting the climate emergency is about taking bold action – not just saying nice things. We’re going to keep pushing the Liberals to stop giving billions of dollars to profitable oil and gas companies and to re-invest this money into renewable energy and a just transition that will protect workers and the environment. New Democrats will keep fighting for a secure, greener future for workers and the environment.”
