Jagmeet Singh statement on May Day

The Leader of Canada’s NDP Jagmeet Singh made the following statement on May Day:

As we come together on another May Day, I would like to extend my gratitude to all workers, activists, and allies who continue to work tirelessly for justice and equality.

May Day is not just a celebration of the labour movement; it is a day to recognize the strength, resilience, and unity of workers around the world. Today, we pay homage to those who have fought – and continue to fight – for better working conditions, fair wages, and the right to organize.

In these challenging times, the rise of the cost of living has become increasingly important. Working families are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of living continues to rise. Now, more than ever, we must stand in solidarity with all workers, especially those who have been disproportionately affected by the inflation crisis and the resulting economic hardships.

The policies of the Conservative and Liberal parties have, for far too long, prioritized the interests of the wealthy and well-connected over those of everyday Canadians. As a result, income inequality has grown, and working people have been left behind. The cost of rent as increased by 60 per cent since Justin Trudeau became prime minister.

As we move forward, let us recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle against increase grocery costs and the housing shortage – all of which contribute to inflationary pressures. We must demand fair wages that keep up with the rising cost of living, and advocate for policies that ensure economic stability for all Canadians.

Let us continue to unite and support one another in our shared fight for a brighter future where working families can be hopeful for their future.

In Solidarity,

Jagmeet Singh

Leader of the New Democratic Party
