Jagmeet Singh Pledges Action Against Climate Change

MONTRÉAL – On Thursday, while campaigning with the NDP candidate in Outremont, Julia Sánchez, Jagmeet Singh stressed the urgency to tackle climate change and became the first federal party leader to sign the Pact For The Transition, adding his voice to the pledge signed by hundreds of thousands of people for immediate action. This coincided with news from the renowned medical journal, The Lancet, showing Canada’s failure to reduce greenhouse gasses is resulting in more than 7,000 Canadian fatalities every year.

“Thousands of Canadians are dying every year from the effects of climate change and, without serious action, things will get much worse,” said the NDP Leader. “That’s why so many people have gravitated to the priorities laid out in the Pact and why today I’m committing to bring these priorities to Ottawa.”

Singh was joined by Alexandre Boulerice, NDP Critic for Environment and Climate Change, and Julia Sánchez. All three of them had plans to campaign the rest of the day in Outremont.

“The upcoming by-election in Outremont is a great opportunity to send a message to Mr. Trudeau that we need to invest in clean energy and green technology, not give away billions for pipelines and subsidies to the fossil fuel sector,” Singh said. “With NDP candidates like Julia Sánchez, you know you have someone in your corner who shares your beliefs and will fight to get real action on climate change.”
