Jagmeet Singh meets with Premier François Legault

OTTAWA - Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh met with Quebec Premier and Chair of the Council of the Federation François Legault to discuss health transfers. In their discussion, Singh pledged to push for an increase in health transfers in the next budget.

“Cuts by successive Liberal and Conservative governments are hurting our health care system, forcing provinces and territories to do more with less,” said Singh. “By working with a real partner, Quebec would have the resources to improve the state of our health care system.”

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that our health care system is important and that we need it to be well funded. After the Liberals criticized Stephen Harper's Conservative plan to cut health transfers, they implemented these cuts leaving the provinces and territories with $31 billion in shortfalls over 10 years. In the meeting, Singh reiterated his commitment to the Premier of Quebec and the Chair of the Council of the Federation to work with the provinces and territories to increase health transfers to provide Canadians with the services they need.

“People expect us to work together to solve the problems they face,” said Singh. “They are tired of the bickering and want concrete results so that people can get the care they need. The NDP has always been a champion for health care and we will continue to fight for a better and more comprehensive system.”
