Jagmeet Singh fighting to tackle the climate crisis and create good jobs for Canadians

While Justin Trudeau’s Liberals continue to subsidize big polluters making record profits, the NDP has a plan to create good jobs for Canadians and respond to the climate crisis with the urgency it requires

OTTAWA — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh visited Penticton on Friday to talk about the NDP’s plan to tackle the climate crisis and create good paying jobs for Canadians. The past few weeks have shown Canadians, and people around the world that the climate crisis is not something of the future, it is happening right now. The wildfires burning in British Columbia have forced families to evacuate from their homes and communities, including communities surrounding Penticton. We need a government that is ready to address this problem with the urgency it requires.

“We cannot afford to waste more time. People are suffering from the devastating impacts of this climate crisis,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau’s Liberals failed to make life better for workers and their families. And instead of tackling the climate crisis, they bought a pipeline. We need action to quickly create good jobs that will better position us to fight the climate crisis and support workers. New Democrats will continue to fight for families in Penticton and fight the climate crisis to win.”

While British Columbia is in a state of emergency battling wildfires, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are not acting urgently to tackle the climate crisis causing the devastation. They bought a pipeline and continue to subsidize big polluters. The NDP’s plan will protect our air, water and land, and create good paying jobs for workers. The NDP is committed to ensuring that the economic recovery from COVID-19 includes good paying jobs with benefits that make strides towards protecting the environment. This work needs to be done alongside First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, working as equal partners in job creation and infrastructure investments that deal with climate change.

“Canadians need a government that will respond to this climate crisis urgently,” said NDP MP Richard Cannings (South Okanagan—West Kootenay). “The Liberals bought a pipeline and have no problem giving away public money to big polluters. That is wrong and families are paying the price. New Democrats are on people’s side. We are committed to making life better for workers and their families while tackling climate change head-on.”
