Jagmeet Singh fighting to deliver help to people in Prince Edward Island

CHARLOTTETOWN — Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh visited Charlottetown to meet with people and with Premier Dennis King to talk about the NDP’s plan to make sure the recovery from COVID-19 doesn’t fall on the backs of workers and their families. While big box stores and big corporations made record profits during the pandemic, Canadian families, seniors and young people struggled to make ends meet. The NDP called on the Liberals to make the ultra-rich pay their fair share so that the recovery doesn’t become an added burden on struggling people, but the Liberals refused.

“I heard from people in Prince Edward Island, and from across the country, who lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends,” said Singh. “Yet while people are still barely getting by Justin Trudeau wants to make Canadians shoulder the burden of the pandemic recovery while protecting the profits of big corporations. The NDP won’t. We have the courage to make the ultra-rich pay their share to pay for the services and help families need.”

On top of letting the ultra-rich off the hook from paying their fair share, the Liberals cut help to families and to seniors who can barely get by. Many seniors in Canada were shocked to learn their Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), rent subsidies and other supports have been partially or completely cut after receiving CERB or CRB. Seniors, who have been hard hit by this pandemic are now struggling to pay their bills and put food on the table because of this undisclosed rule by the Liberal government. New Democrats are continuing to fight to make sure seniors get the supports they need.

“Canadians made huge sacrifices to keep each other safe throughout the pandemic. They still need the government to have their backs,” said Singh. “The Liberal government keeps proving that they aren’t interested in helping Canadians who are struggling. New Democrat will keep fighting for people and make sure they are at the heart of everything we do.”
