Gazan stands with Family of Eishia Hudson, calls for Public Inquiry into Systemic Racism and Police

TREATY 1 TERRITORY, WINNIPEG — NDP MP Leah Gazan is supporting calls for an independent investigation today, after the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) released a report on the investigation into the death of Eishia Hudson, indicating that Manitoba Crown Prosecution has decided not to press charges against the officer who shot and killed Eishia Hudson.

Since the tragic death of the 16-year-old girl, Gazan has gotten to know the family of the late Eishia Hudson. “This is a good family. We must ensure that we always stand up for justice. This includes justice for Eishia Hudson,” said Gazan.

Hudson’s family is calling for a public inquiry looking into systemic racism between Indigenous people and the police. Last April, three Indigenous peoples’ lives were taken at the hands of police over a 10-day span, including Eishia Hudson.

“There needs to be a public inquiry looking into systemic racism between Indigneous peoples and the police. I anticipate an inquest to be called due to the number of deaths by police. We need to address the closeness of the IIU with the Winnipeg Police Service and Manitoba Crown Prosecution. I have concerns about that potential bias,” added Gazan.

Gazan supports the call for an independent assessment to be carried out, including outside counsel to ensure the public’s faith in the administration of justice and an impartial process.
