Canada's NDP

Defending friends who didn’t get the job done

As people learn of last night’s vote on the NDP’s motion to fight climate change, one party’s position has taken Canadians aback.

Last night, the Leader of the Green Party voted against holding the current and previous governments to account for their inaction on fighting climate change. And she voted against demanding that the current government immediately provide a plan for dealing with a potentially catastrophic two degree rise in global temperatures.

While she now tries to claim it’s the NDP playing politics, as Executive Director of Sierra Club of Canada she had no problem pointing the finger at the failed Liberal record:

"It is quite true to say that the 13-year legacy of the Liberal government was to say that they wanted to reduce greenhouse gases out of one side of their mouths, but at the same time invest heavily in the most greenhouse gas-intensive industry possible”

The fact is the Liberal record on reducing greenhouse gases was a failure. And it is shocking to see the leader of the Green Party of Canada now refuse to call the Liberals on this failure.

The Conservative’s climate change denial was expected. The Liberal Party’s denial was predictable from an old line party. But the position of the leader of the Green Party of Canada is incomprehensible.

Canadians deserve better.
