Chow to introduce bill to protect cyclists and pedestrians

TORONTO - The Conservative Government’s lax approach to transport issues is putting Canadian pedestrians and cyclists at risk, according to New Democrat Official Opposition Transport critic Olivia Chow.

On Monday, Chow will introduce a bill to improve road safety through the proven and practical use of guards on all heavy road trucks, preventing vulnerable road-users from being trapped in the space between a truck’s wheels.

“When it comes to creating safe roads for everyone, the Conservatives are dropping the ball. The government should start listening to more than just their industry friends,” said Chow. “One preventable death is one too many. It’s time we did a better job protecting cyclists and pedestrians.”

The fitting of heavy trucks with side guards is recognized both in Canada and internationally as a simple measure that can save the lives of pedestrians and cyclists. In Europe, the EU has required this for more than two decades.

"New Democrats are urging the federal government to put the safety of pedestrians and cyclists first," said Chow. "This is a common sense measure that can save lives."

Since elected in 2006, Chow has been relentless in pushing for the mandatory side guards installation on trucks through motions, petitions and a previous version of this Private Member's Bill.

Chow's efforts are supported by The Jessica Campaign and various cyclists advocacy groups.

Touched by the recent death of cyclist Jenna Morrison, who was hit by a truck, Chow will be introducing the Private Member's Bill in her memory.
