Canadians Want Urgent Action on Plastic Pollution

NDP Deputy Leader and Environment Critic, Alexandre Boulerice, and NDP Fisheries, Oceans and Coast Guard Critic, Gord Johns, issued the following statement:

“Plastic pollution is a public health crisis as well as an environmental crisis. A recent survey revealed that most Canadians are worried about the impacts of plastic waste on our environment. And the majority believe Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government needs to do more!
New Democrats agree that urgent action is needed and Canada is trailing behind. Many countries have already implemented concrete measures to tackle plastic pollution by introducing a plan to ban single-use plastics. But the Liberal government has failed to bring in a strategy and continues to only bring-in half-measures to attack climate change.
The NDP has already announced that we would ban single-use plastics everywhere in Canada by 2022, as part of our comprehensive strategy to reduce plastic waste. New Democrats also passed Motion M-151 calling for the development of a national strategy to address plastics pollution in and around the aquatic environment.
It’s high time the Liberal government be a leader and take decisive action in the fight against climate change. We hope they’ll stand with New Democrats in banning single-use plastics by 2022.”
