Canada should take a strong stance on gender equality at UN Commission on the Status of Women

NDP Status of Women Critic Mylène Freeman (Argenteuil--Papineau--Mirabel) is calling on the Government of Canada to take a strong stance on women's equality at the 59th Commission on the Status of Women, ongoing this March at the UN Headquarters in New York.

"While we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Canada missed an opportunity to take a strong, progressive stance for gender equality," said Freeman.

Engagement of civil society and women’s groups was critical in securing a bold and progressive declaration in Beijing in 1995 to promote gender equality and the human rights of women and girls.

"Bold leadership is needed now more than ever. Internationally and at home, the Canadian government should include, consult and support women's organizations and advocacy groups in order to ensure that efforts to realize gender equality, empowerment, and the human rights of all women and girls are realized."
