Description

The Director of Operations is responsible for the organizational development and implementation of strategies for human resource management, policies and internal communications, and elaboration of budgets. This position reports to the Chief of Staff and is a member of the Management Team

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and implement strategies for human resource management and development
  • for the NDP Leader’s or Research Office and NDP Members of Parliament, including staff selection, performance appraisals, morale, discipline and training
  • Strengthen organizational governance and HR practices across the organization to ensure continued adherence to the guidelines established and collective agreement and ensure that HR practices reflect the values articulated by the NDP
  • Assist with labour relations and help resolve differences as they arise
  • Work with Caucus members to foster a strong relationship with UFCW Local 232
  • Provide advice, coaching and consultation to management and Members of Parliament on rights and responsibilities under the collective agreement and to build a strong staff team
  • Work with the Human Resources Coordinator and Staff Trainer in the recruitment, hiring and training of new staff
  • Develop budget plans, oversee the finances of the Leader’s and Research budgets and work with the Coordinator of Finance
  • Provide training to Management, Members of Parliament and staff when required
  • Oversee and coordinate administrative staff in the Leader’s Office and serve as the senior liaison with House of Commons contacts
  • Ensure confidentiality of all proprietary and human resources related information
  • Advance the NDP caucus’ parliamentary goals and agenda
  • Work collaboratively to advance the NDP Caucus parliamentary goals and agenda
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A team player with high standards for partnerships, cooperation and respect
  • Significant human resources and management experience in a unionized work environment
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, or a recognized certificate or diploma in human resources/labour relations, mediation or conflict resolution skill, organizational development or equivalent experience
  • Extensive knowledge of human resources functions including recruitment, staffing, attendance management, learning and development, employee orientation, feedback process, diversity management and organizational design;
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of labour relations
  • Excellent judgment and demonstrated problem solving, consultative, persuasive and conflict resolution skills in order to provide direction and advice on a variety of complex human resources issues to all levels of management and staff;
  • Knowledge and experience in a labour union or civil society organization
  • Strong political and strategic skills and understanding
  • Excellent interpersonal communications, computer and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal politics and sound knowledge of the Federal NDP, its policies, programme and structure.
  • Bilingualism is required
