Turmel to Conservatives: act now on economy, jobs

Turmel lays out New Democrat vision for a stronger Canada and stronger economy.

OTTAWA – In a major speech to the Canadian Club, New Democrat leader Nycole Turmel slammed the Conservative’s inaction on the economy and laid out a better vision for building a stronger economy and a more united Canada.

“The Conservative approach has simply failed too many Canadians. Today, families are working harder than ever – just to keep from falling behind. Good Canadian jobs are being shipped overseas, while our jobless rate inches higher. Stephen Harper can boast about his economic record all he wants. But this is what reality looks like for Canadian families.”

Turmel urged the Conservative government to not repeat the mistakes they made in 2008 and wait until a recession had taken hold before acting. She said that New Democrats will put pressure to act on the economy and kick-start job creation right away.

“New Democrats won’t let Mr. Harper sleepwalk through another recession. Canadians won’t let him. That’s why New Democrats are pushing the government to work with us on an action plan that focuses on jobs.”

Turmel listed the Conservative inaction on the economy, its targeting of the Wheat Board and its punitive approach to scrapping the HST in B.C. as creating insecurity in our economy. A stable economy is based on a strong, united Canada, and it’s the New Democrat’s approach to bringing Canadians together that’s providing that stability, said Turmel.
