IN THEIR OWN WORDS: Trudeau’s minister shrugs at millionaire tax cheats

Yesterday, at the Finance Committee, the Minister of National Revenue was asked point blank why no millionaires have been prosecuted of tax evasion since Justin Trudeau has become Prime Minister.

Here is the exchange, found at 16:58:

NDP Finance Critic, Peter Julian:

“I want to get back to the revelations this morning that wealthy Canadians, the ultra-rich, with fortunes of tens of millions of dollars. Over the course of the past six years under you mandate Madame Minister, there has not been a single charge laid about income tax evasion. Why have the ultra-rich in this country been treated under your ministry with kid gloves?”

Minister of National Revenue, Diane Lebouthillier:

“Mr. Chair, that’s completely false… … The ultra-rich will not be treated with kid gloves… … I can tell you that if you think we’re going to resolve everything I think you’re naïve…. …. The super wealthy are able to pay for super lawyers and super tax specialists. They can do everything to get out of paying their fair share.”

Unlike this Minister, we don’t believe accountability is a naïve expectation when it comes to making the ultra-rich pay their taxes.

Liberals continue to help their rich friends while Canadians, and our public services, suffer.

Canadians deserve better.
