Statement by the Official Opposition on National Housing Day

Official Opposition Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga) and deputy critic Mike Sullivan (York South-Weston) made the following statement on National Housing Day:

“The Conservative government must address Canada’s nation-wide housing crisis.

Unfortunately the Conservatives are abandoning their social housing responsibilities. This clearly shows that they have no intention of dealing with the situation despite urgent requests by a number of organizations including the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Food Banks Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, not to mention the New Democratic Party.

The statistics are alarming. One in four Canadians spend more than a third of their income on housing. We are facing a serious shortage of affordable housing, many houses are in an advanced state of deterioration and the provinces are no longer able to meet the demand due to a lack of stable funding from the government.

On this National Housing Day, New Democrats reiterate their commitment to call for a national housing strategy and long-term government investments in social and affordable housing in Canada.”
