Statement by Official Opposition Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga) on appointment of CMHC Chairman of the Board

I would like to congratulate Robert P. Kelly on his appointment as Chairman of the Board of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Since its founding in 1946, the CHMC has been Canada's best tool for ensuring the confidence and stability of the housing market, while contributing to the growth of the rental and cooperative housing stock.

Robert P. Kelly has extensive experience in finance, which is a major asset for monitoring of the housing market. I hope he will protect the CMHC from privatization. I also hope he will safeguard the institution's independence and transparency, at a time when the government is moving in the opposite direction.

Mr. Kelly has many challenges facing him. We’re looking to see the CHMC return to its founding mission, by re-launching the construction of social housing and renewing long-term agreements to ensure the sustainability of existing stock.

I wish him every success in his new duties.
