Statement by New Democrat leader Jack Layton on the death of Steve Cardiff
I was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Yukon MLA Steve Cardiff in a car accident near Whitehorse.
Steve approached life and politics with conviction, strength and determination. He was a passionate representative for the people of Mount Lorne and his constituents – along with all Yukoners – will never forget Steve’s integrity and dedication to making a difference in the lives of Yukon families. He always looked for opportunities to work with others in the best interests of Yukoners and embodied some of the very best qualities you hope for in your elected representative.
His history as a sheet metal journeyman and the local president of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters showed his strong commitment to working Canadians. He was also fiercely dedicated to the rights of First Nations peoples, whose language and culture he strove to protect.
He will be greatly missed in his community and among all New Democrats who had the pleasure of working with him. Our community has lost a great fighter.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues as we all share and mourn this loss. Steve will be deeply missed.
