Statement by NDP MP Randall Garrison on the Victoria bomb plot arrests

Like BC residents and Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast, I was deeply dismayed to learn of a plot involving explosive devices at the BC Legislature on Canada Day.

On behalf of the NDP caucus I extend sincere gratitude to officials from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams, as well as law enforcement personnel at the federal, provincial, municipal levels for their outstanding work in keeping everyone safe.

Their professionalism thwarted this despicable attempt to cause death, injury and terror among those celebrating the founding of our country yesterday. All Canadians can take pride in their work.

Canadians are renowned around the world for our openness and we cherish the public accessibility of our democratic institutions. While we remain vigilant regarding potential threats to our way of life, we will not let this incident darken our hearts.

New Democrats encourage all levels of government to continue to work together to strengthen cooperation among intelligence and law enforcement networks dealing with terrorism.
