Statement on Anne Minh-Thu Quach's Political Future

Anne Minh-Thu Quach, MP for Salaberry—Suroît, made the following statement:

T“It is with a heavy heart, and after months of careful reflection, that I announce today my intention to not seek a third mandate in the next federal election on October 21st, 2019.
I will continue to represent the issues that matter to you until the end of my mandate. As for my decision to pass the torch, it has to do with family matters. My daughter Mila, whom you have seen grow up, will be entering kindergarten next September and my teacher’s and mother’s heart wants to be by her side at this crucial stage in her life. I’m also happy to let you know that I am carrying a second child. I must admit that I am looking forward to enjoying maternity leave in the intimacy of our family home.
To the people in my constituency, then and now: I lived eight breathtaking years representing you, travelling around the vast and beautiful place we all share and call home. A riding this diverse presents many challenges. You helped me discover the world of agriculture, the world of business (an area that once intimidated me), the colourful community organizations and the importance of the Akwesasne Mohawk First Nation in the history of this part of world and the issues related to their sovereignty.
Most importantly, you always pushed me to listen to the needs of the most vulnerable so that they could access better public services. You are caring people, you stand together and you are fighters.
I’m convinced the NDP has a future here in the riding, in Québec and in Canada. Many of us share the same values of solidarity, commitment and protection of our common good. After a bitter battle, with the support of my NDP colleagues in Ottawa, and your valuable cooperation, we succeeded in getting rid of the wreck of the Kathryn Spirit.
You supported many of my initiatives: starting a youth committee and creating “Femmes de tête” to offer local examples of women in leadership positions in a variety of settings. We educated Canadians everywhere about the importance of “buy local” policies to support our farmers.
Together, we fought the government for pay equity and we won, despite some imperfections. And together, we elaborated a plan of action that could be immediately deployed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsuis. I wish to thank my NDP colleagues who have supported me since 2011–during both the bad times and the euphoric ones. I also want to thank our Leader Jagmeet Singh for trusting me with various responsibilities in recent years. And I’d like to give a big thank you to all the activists, supporters and volunteers I met over the years. You were a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
Until October 2019, let's continue to work together! Stay tuned for what I will be proposing! And be assured that I still need your active participation and your opinions!”
