Rouleau Report shows convoy response let Canadians down

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement in response to the Justice Rouleau Report released on Friday:

“The report released today reiterates what residents in Ottawa and Canadians impacted by the border closures already know—the Emergencies Act was necessary because all levels of government failed to respond to the convoy protest.

People were threatened, harassed, and abused in their communities. Workers trying to feed their families lost wages because they were forced to miss shifts when the border closure forced businesses to close.

The report makes clear that this situation –and the response to it from all levels of government and policing— was unacceptable.

Using the Emergencies Act should never be taken lightly. The recommendations from this report have to be taken seriously and should serve as a road map to improve policing and the government’s responses to crises.

We want to thank Justice Rouleau for his comprehensive report, and we take his note that this report should be a warning to Canadians about the work that needs to be done to ensure that using the Emergencies Act isn’t necessary in the future.”
