Reality Check: Liberals Don’t Listen to ‘Different Perspectives’

Justin Trudeau is defending his Liberal government from charges of hypocrisy by claiming they listen to “different perspectives” and to Canadians with “a broad range of views” – but his government’s track record tells a different story. Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have spent years ignoring or silencing voices they didn’t want to hear.

  • Seven experts resigned from an oversight advisory board, saying the Liberal government “betrayed” them by giving no powers to a new government watchdog that would investigate overseas human rights abuses by corporations.
  • The vice-chair of the Liberal government’s Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee resigned calling the Liberal government “timid” on action to prevent gun violence.
  • Justin Trudeau booted Ministers Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott from his Liberal caucus for their courageous decision to speak up about his office’s wrongdoing.
  • His former parliamentary secretary resigned from the Liberal caucus to sit as an independent after the SNC-Lavalin scandal.
  • A lawyer resigned from the national Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, citing “a pattern of interference from the federal government”.
  • When he realized the results did not benefit his party, Justin Trudeau refused to implement the all-party recommendations of the Special Committee on Electoral Reform.

Mr. Trudeau likes to say that the Liberal Party is listening to Canadians. But his Party has a record of hearing only what they like – and leaving the rest. He hugs us in public with pretty words and empty promises – and then makes backroom deals with his corporate friends.

But in October, Canadians have a chance to finally elect a government that has the courage to listen.

Unlike Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet has been hearing what Canadians have to say.
He’s heard from people all over the country that life is getting less and less affordable. That’s why the NDP New Deal invests in services people need, makes life more affordable and fights the climate crisis. It replaces Justin Trudeau’s empty talk with concrete action.

Jagmeet and New Democrats have the courage to listen to Canadians, instead of working for big corporations and their lobbyists.

Jagmeet and the NDP know whose side they’re on.
