REALITY CHECK: Canadians want a wealth tax and the NDP are the ones to deliver it

A recent poll done by Abacus Data found that the majority of Canadians believe wealth inequality should be dealt with by increasing taxes on wealthy and large corporations, especially those who profited greatly during the pandemic.

According to the poll, 89 per cent of Canadians want to see a wealth tax of one per cent laid on Canada’s wealthiest Canadians and corporations to help pay for the pandemic recovery, with 70 per cent of Canadians polled saying they don’t believe large corporations and wealthy Canadians pay their fair share.

In November 2020 the NDP put forward a motion to fix tax inequality and plan for a fair recovery. The motion sought to make those who profited billions off the pandemic pay for the recovery. The Liberals, Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois voted against it.

The Liberals and Conservatives will make Canadians shoulder the burden of the pandemic recovery while protecting the profits of big corporations. The NDP won’t.
