NDP statement on Prime Minister's trip to Washington D.C.

The NDP's Critic for Auto Strategy and International Trade, Brian Masse, made the following statement:

"It is important that the Prime Minister use this trip to Washington, D.C. to reset our relationship with the United States and fight for the needs of Canadians, especially Canadian workers.

President Biden’s Buy America provision and the electric car tax credit will be extremely harmful to workers in this country. These measures continue the departure from a unified approach to improving the environment, restoring North American manufacturing and ensuring good jobs. To address the concerns Canadians have about American protectionism, Canada needs to establish a national auto and manufacturing strategy so our industry and workers are protected against this American approach.

We would also urge the Prime Minister to take this opportunity to follow President Biden’s leadership on other important issues like ensuring the ultra-rich pay their fair share and taking more ambitious climate measures."
