NDP Statement on new EDC climate targets

The NDP’s Critic for Environment, Laurel Collins (Victoria) and the Critic for Natural Resources, Richard Cannings (South Okanagan – West Kootenay) made the following statement:

“Over the past few weeks Canadians have been displaced by wildfires and tornados, proving that the climate crisis is not something of the future, it is happening right now. We need a government that is ready to address this problem with the urgency it requires.

“The recent announcement from EDC on their carbon reduction target and path to net-zero falls short of Canada’s climate commitments and is incompatible with limiting global warming to 1.5°. The Liberal government continues to give away billions of dollars to big oil and gas companies, increasing fossil fuel subsidies which fly in the face of their stated climate goals. Canada needs to rapidly move away from fossil fuels; however, this announcement is inadequate and their objectives will only slow this urgently needed transition.”

“New Democrats know that Canadians cannot wait any longer to get serious about climate change. It is happening now and warrants immediate action.”
