NDP Statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“On December 6, 1989, 14 young women studying at the École Polytechnique de Montréal were murdered because they were women.

Today, we remember and honour these women whose bright futures were stolen in an instant. Our hearts are with their families and all those whose lives were forever changed by this senseless act of violence.

In Canada and around the world, violence against women is shockingly prevalent. Every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Over half of Canadian women will experience violence at some point in their lives, and thousands of Indigenous women in Canada have been murdered or gone missing over the past 30 years.

New Democrats are holding the Liberal government to their promise of a national action plan to end gender-based violence and demand justice for Indigenous women who have gone missing from our communities. We also call on the government to fund operations at Canada’s shelters and transition housing for women fleeing violence.

On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, let’s recommit to building a Canada where women and girls can live without fear of violence.”
