NDP Statement on the Appointment of Brenda Lucki as RCMP Commissioner

NDP Critic for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Matthew Dubé (Beloeil – Chambly), made the following statement:

"New Democrats congratulate Brenda Lucki, the new RCMP commissioner. Mrs. Lucki is the first woman named to this position in a permanent capacity – Beverley Busson was named interim commissioner in 2007 – and I am proud to finally see a woman leading the RCMP.

Obviously, she faces the difficult mandate of changing the current work culture within the RCMP in order to put an end to the well-documented toxic work environment, sexism, and harassment within its ranks. As a member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces because of her work to improve relations with Indigenous communities, she brings important and crucial expertise to her new position.

New Democrats will follow her work with great interest, especially her leadership in doing more to better protect the private lives of Canadian citizens. Among other things, we are expecting her to put an end to the use of controversial practices, such as accessing Canadians' personal information without a warrant. I wish her good luck in her mandate to keep Canadians safe.”
