NDP launches pan-Canadian food strategy

New Democrats unveil plan that will strengthen Canada’s food system, from farm to fork

Following through on the 2011 election promise, today Official Opposition Agriculture critic Malcolm Allen (Welland) and Deputy Agriculture critic Ruth Ellen Brosseau (Berthier-Maskinongé) launched the NDP’s pan-Canadian food strategy titled “Everybody Eats”.

“Without a comprehensive food policy, Canada simply lags behind many industrial countries, like England and Australia,” said Allen. “We need federal leadership that connects Canadians from farm to fork and with today’s unveiling I’m proud to say New Democrats are rising to meet that challenge.”

After three years of outreach, today’s release positions the NDP as the only party in Canada with a comprehensive plan to meet the challenges facing agriculture and food security. The NDP strategy puts forward practical policies to ensure that Canadians eat well, that our agricultural communities are sustainable for generations, and that Canadian products find growing markets.

“Canadians from coast to coast to coast understand that food matters,” said Brosseau. “We need to look at the whole picture and bring an integrated approach to federal policy that connects agriculture, rural development, health and income security. It can be done.”
