NDP forces Liberals to introduce an Early Learning and Child Care Act

In response to introduction of Early Learning and Child Care Act, NDP Critic for Families, Children and Social Development, Leah Gazan, issued the following statement:

“Today’s legislation is long overdue after years of broken Liberal promises. It took advocacy from child care professionals, unions and activists alongside the NDP to force the Liberals to finally bring in this legislation.

Without the NDP at the table, this would not have happened as fast and the Liberals would not have prioritized public and not-for-profit providers.

We worked hard to make sure the Liberals' bill works for Canadian families. We know that public and not-for-profit daycare means affordable, quality and accessible daycares for families who need them—not daycares that make profits off the backs of parents.

And the Conservatives have opposed affordable child care every step of the way. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives would cut child care for families.

The NDP pushed the Liberals to prioritize non-profit daycare to also ensure accountability for parents and their children and for fairer and livable wages for child care workers.

As this legislation goes through the House, the NDP is happy to work with child care professionals, unions and activists to make it even stronger.

New Democrats will continue to fight to give families relief. Every parent across Canada should be able to find the affordable child care you need, when you need it.”
