NDP Calls Out Shocking Legal Case Against Residential School Survivor

OTTAWA – Today, NDP Critic for Indigenous Youth, Charlie Angus (Timmins—James Bay), called out federal Liberals for fighting compensation to a residential school survivor who was the victim of rape by an Indian Affairs official.
“This Liberal government is using the Justice Department to fight against Indigenous Peoples,” said Angus. “This case is part of a dismal pattern that this government has employed against the legal rights of residential school survivors and First Nations children. This is an appalling misuse of the power of the Justice Department.”
Angus wrote to Minister Bennett to raise the case of the residential school survivor and demanded recognition for the rights of victims of government abuse and appropriate compensation to restore trust in the process of reconciliation.
“The right thing to do is to stop dragging residential school survivors in courts and giving compensation for the years of abuse they had to endure,” added Angus. “Enough empty words from this Liberal government. We need real action that will bring real justice to Indigenous Peoples in Canada.”
