National adaptation strategy too little, too late: NDP

Richard Cannings, the NDP's critic for Emergency Preparedness (Climate Change Resilience), issued the following statement in response to the release of the national adaptation strategy on Thursday:

“The $1.6 billion announced today is a start in meeting our needs for Climate Change Resilience, however this is only about a third of what is needed. Canadians are living with the deadly and catastrophic impacts of the climate crisis now – from Hurricane Fiona to wildfires and floods. People have been losing their incomes, homes and even their lives, and these tragedies are growing more frequent.

The Trudeau Liberals are not taking anywhere near enough action to prevent the climate crisis from spiraling out of control, and the new strategy announced Thursday doesn't do enough to shield communities from its impacts. It's too little, too late. Just last week the Auditor General revealed this government is spending nearly $500 million more to respond to emergencies than it is to prevent climate-related disasters in First Nations communities.

New Democrats are calling for an end to fossil fuel subsidies, investments in renewable energy, and much greater supports for workers, so they benefit from a green transition."
