Liberals not doing enough to protect French language

NDP Critic for Official Languages, Niki Ashton, made the following statement:

"The report released today by the Commissioner of Official Languages clearly indicates that this government is not doing enough to protect the language rights of French-speaking communities.

The Liberals will say they are standing up for francophones, but the substantial increase in complaints shows that this government is failing to stop the decline of French. The latest report from the Commissioner of Official Languages sounded the alarm that the language rights of francophone workers are being violated under this government. Workers are entitled to see concrete changes as soon as possible - the inaction must end now.

In addition, the recent scandals surrounding the disregard for French by the CEO of Air Canada and CN reflect the lack of leadership from the federal government in the seven years the Liberals have been in power.

The NDP is fighting to better protect French language rights across the country. New Democrats will press the Liberals to improve the current Official Languages Modernization Bill to strengthen the official languages Commissioner's powers and better protect the language rights of French-speaking communities."
