The Liberal government is failing Canadians and our communities on the climate crisis

OTTAWA – Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh responded to the Environment Commissioner’s scathing reports that show the Liberal government is failing to provide credible plans to meet their climate goals or to support Canadians. The reports confirmed that, despite their promises, the Liberals are failing to address the climate emergency and they have no real plan in place to support workers, small businesses and Indigenous communities in transitioning to a greener future.

"Canadians are frustrated and disappointed. The Liberals promised to be leaders on climate action and they claimed they’d have workers’ backs but they’ve failed to deliver on these promises,” said Singh. “These reports show the Liberals are taking us in the wrong direction. They continue to give billions of dollars to profitable oil and gas companies instead of investing that money in helping energy workers with good, sustainable jobs or helping communities with climate resistant infrastructure. Canadians are tired of paying the price for this government’s failure to take action or make a plan for the future. New Democrats will always fight for workers and our communities to have a better future.”

The Liberal government is letting big polluters off the hook, while the climate crisis disproportionately impacts Indigenous communities and small businesses. The reports shows that the Liberals are no where near reaching their climate goals and we’re lagging behind other countries on transitioning to renewable energy and meeting emission targets. Under the Liberal government, Canada is the worst greenhouse gas emitter of all G7 nations.

“Canadians are incredibly concerned about the climate crisis and we know urgent action is needed,” said Singh. “With no plan, non-existent policy and no just transition, the Liberals are losing the fight against the climate crisis—and it’s Canadians who are paying the price. New Democrats have been urging the government to stop giving money to big oil and gas companies and instead make sure that the government takes bolder action to address the climate crisis and supports Canadian workers. We’ll never stop fighting for a better future for all Canadians.”
