Happy Pakistan Independence Day
As Pakistani Canadians across Canada gather to celebrate Independence Day, on behalf of Tom Mulcair and all New Democrats I extend my best wishes to all celebrating.
Over the past 66 years Pakistan has become an exceptional example of the importance of self-determination. The independent successes of Pakistan has had great impact on Canada.
Since the end of the British Raj in 1947, many Pakistanis immigrated to Canada and brought with them their values of hard work and determination. This entrepreneurial spirit, as well as the gift of culture and the arts, has collectively contributed tremendously to the success of Canada.
Canada is a country that was built by pioneers from countries such as Pakistan and that legacy can been seen in the accomplishments of the Pakistani community and the commitment to making Canada our home.
Diversity is one of Canada's great strengths and should be celebrated. The Pakistani community in Canada, and especially in the Greater Toronto Area, has enriched our cultural landscape and has helped to shape our shared history.
I am proud to count Pakistani Canadians among my neighbours and friends, and today I join you in celebrating Independence Day.
Again, on behalf of all New Democrats and as the NDP Multiculturalism Critic, I extend my very best as you mark 66 years of independence.
