Corruption in Canada’s Senate: The NeverEnding Story

While the trio of Stephen Harper appointed Senators Pamela Wallin, Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau are facing motions to suspend them from the Senate; the list of other senators facing allegations of financial improprieties continues to grow.

This evening we learned that Pierre Trudeau appointed Liberal Senator Colin Kenny has been accused of abusing his position as a Senator.

Former Executive Assistant to Colin Kenny, Pascale Brisson described to RDI the work she did for the Senator. According to her, half the day was devoted to:

  • Completing personal tasks for the Senator, including ordering his clothes online, finding a personal trainer for him, paying his dog walker, giving money to his son, finding dog sitters.
  • Dealing with his personal bills which were sent to his Senator office, including his water and hydro bills, condo fees, and his VISA.
  • Making appointments and coordinating renovations for his personal condo.

The response from Senator Kenny:

“She was responsible for keeping my schedule and it's like making a doctor's appointment. It's not unusual for somebody's executive assistant to make appointments for them.” -

It appears that an inflated sense of entitlement and allegations of corruption in the Senate is a bipartisan affair.

Canadians deserve better.
