Conservative shut down debate for the 40th time, happy anniversary!

It was only 48 days ago that the Conservatives smashed the all-time record for shutting down debate in the House of Commons. Not content to sit on their laurels, the Conservatives are now pushing forward at top speed.

Last week the Conservatives moved five time allocation motions in five sitting days, a record in the history of Parliament for shutting down debate in a single week.

With scandal after scandal racking up, we are reminded of a comment from an MP long ago:

“We have closure today precisely because there is no deadline and there are no plans. Instead of having deadlines, plans and goals, we must insist on moving forward because the government is simply increasingly embarrassed by the state of the debate and it needs to move on.” Stephen Harper, House of Commons, December 2, 2002

Canadians deserve better.
