Responsibilities
- Provide timely political research on various topics, including through using Access to Information requests and Questions on the Order Paper
- Monitor government legislation and ministerial programmes
- Liaise with civil society actors, allied groups, leading private sector organizations, experts, think-tanks and Party officials for input on policy and emerging issues
- Suggest questions for the daily Question period
- Write research products, including Reality Checks, Press Releases, committee reports and briefing notes
- Provide background material to use for communications, media and correspondence, as required
- Write, collect material and prepare householders, direct mail, op-ed pieces, media material, news releases, speeches, articles and correspondence in coordination with colleagues in the constituency office
- Act as media liaison for the Member, including organizing press conference and other media events
- Able and willing to assist with general office related tasks such as answering telephones, reception, sorting mail, etc.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationship with key individuals and organizations in the community, working on similar issues
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in investigative political research or reporting
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience working with Access to information legislation, Questions on the Order Paper and other research tools
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and provide timely, relevant and media-oriented analysis
- Knowledge of the NDP and its policies, non-governmental organizations, Canadian and British Columbian political affairs
- Experience working with elected officials, demonstrated strategic political sense and sound political judgment
- Ability to work well in a co-operative work environment, establish priorities and identify political opportunities
- Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills in English
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, under pressure and meet strict deadlines
- Excellent computer skills, specifically good knowledge of MS Office 2010 and Windows 7
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Bilingualism, an asset
Annual salary
$55,500
(salary levels subject to clauses 12 and 21 of the collective agreement)
