Statement on the 20th anniversary of 9/11

On the 20th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11, Jagmeet made the following statement:

On this day, 20 years ago, history was changed forever.

Across Canada and around the world, we gathered in shock and watched the unimaginable loss, chaos and pain unfold on our televisions.

Now, as we witness the impacts of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and the ongoing cost of human lives, there is an added weight to the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

We remember those who were lost, honour the courage of those who went above and beyond to save lives, and we can look back with pride on the generosity and selflessness of those – in Newfoundland and Labrador and elsewhere – who opened their doors to our American friends in their time of need.

9/11 was a tragedy that led to many more. And, while reflecting on the two decades of history we’ve lived since, more than anything, we need to not delay in recommitting to doing the hard work of building a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Of course, it will not be easy. But, if we want a different result, we need to do things differently.
