REALITY CHECK: Trudeau’s abortion stance is all for show

After 6 years of being in government, 2 years after explicit promises to act, and on the eve of an election, Justin Trudeau has suddenly found his words to stand for women’s rights to access abortions in New Brunswick. Yet once again, Justin Trudeau looks like he cares, says the right thing but comes up short on delivery.

The grand sweeping promise and tough talk over abortion access?

“We withheld millions of dollars in Health Transfers to New Brunswick because they have not lived up to their obligations under the Canada Health Act” - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, CPAC 16:00, July 23, 2021

“The clawback is significant” - Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Global News, July 23, 2021

The delivery? In spite of his headline-grabbing claims, a PMO spokesperson was quick to correct the Prime Minister that Ottawa has not “withheld millions”. The grand total of health care funding withheld from New Brunswick is actually $140,216.

Does anyone really think clawing back $140,216 will change New Brunswick’s policy restricting access to women’s health services and abortions?

After 6 years and all the rhetoric, the fact remains that New Brunswick women are still left with limited access to abortion services - and the Liberals haven't improved access in other parts of the country either.

We’ve learned a lot about Justin Trudeau over the last 6 years - whenever he delivers pretty words, Canadians know how important it is to check on delivery.

Canadians deserve better.
