New Democrats fighting for good-paying union jobs at the Volkswagen electric vehicle battery plant

NDP Critic for auto strategy, MP Brian Masse (Windsor West), made the following statement in reaction to the announcement of the Volkswagen electric vehicle plant agreement in St. Thomas:

“New Democrats have been on the front lines fighting for electric vehicle rebates and manufacturing here in Canada for years. And we've advocated for a national strategy for the Canadian auto industry. It's a relief to see this government finally step up and start working toward securing Canada’s climate and economic future.

While we welcome this investment, if this Liberal government is willing to give 13 billion dollars to a major corporation, good-paying union jobs must be required or at least a commitment, in writing, that Volkswagen will allow this plant to unionize.

It’s concerning that the Prime Minister today refused to answer directly whether this agreement has any stipulations on decent jobs for Canadians. New Democrats will keep fighting to ensure the people of St. Thomas and all Canadians benefit, not just Volkswagen CEOs and shareholders."
