Muzzling of federal scientists worse than ever

A new report released today by Evidence for Democracy lays bare the widespread muzzling of public scientists working within federal departments and agencies.

“The Conservatives have used every tool at their disposal to muzzle our scientists and this report is further proof of the Conservatives’ disregard for transparency” said NDP Science & Technology critic Kennedy Stewart (Burnaby-Douglas). “Political interference in the communication of science undermines our researchers and democracy as a whole.”

The NDP has tabled legislation to end muzzling of federal scientists once and for all. Similar to recent policies implemented by President Obama’s administration, M-453 would allow scientists to speak publicly about their work and would prohibit Ministerial staff from unduly limiting media access or suppressing scientific results.

“Beginning with the elimination of the National Science Advisor, the Conservatives have tried to prevent, limit, and restrict our scientists from sharing their research on critical issues to Canadians, like health and the environment,” said NDP Science & Technology deputy critic Laurin Liu (Rivière-des-Mille-Îles). “It’s time the government reversed these reckless policies, showed a real commitment to evidence and transparency, and started standing up for our scientists.”
