International Women's Day 2017: It's time for action

New Democrats continue to fight for equality

We can’t stop fighting for women’s rights

The political rhetoric of the past year has insulted, demonized and threatened women, Muslims, immigrants, people of colour, the LGBTQ community, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, and survivors of sexual assault.

It is more important than ever that we stand together in common cause.

Canada has fallen from first to 25th on the United Nations Gender Equality Index and violence against women remains unacceptably prevalent.

Canadian women continue to make just 73.5 cents for every dollar a man makes. Approximately every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Over half of Canadian women will experience violence at some point in their lives, and thousands of Indigenous women in Canada have been murdered or gone missing.

New Democrats are fighting for gender equality every day. We can’t stop, and we won’t stop.

New Democrats are calling for pro-active pay equity legislation now to close the wage gap and deliver economic equality for women. We’re fighting for gender equity in parliament, holding the Liberal government to their promise of a national action plan to fight gender-based violence, and demanding justice for Indigenous women who have gone missing from our communities.
