Westjet workers are fighting for fair pay and respect, but that fight is at risk. The Liberals have used Section 107 multiple times to stamp out worker power, forcing them back to work without a fair contract. Last year, they forced Air Canada flight attendants back to work just 12 hours after going on strike.
Now, as WestJet flight attendants and cabin crew are picking up the struggle against unpaid work, we’re telling the Liberals: no more attacks on the right to strike.
WestJet workers deserve to be paid for the hours they're at work, keeping passengers safe. But right now, that isn't happening. Flight attendants and cabin crew are working up to 35 unpaid hours a month.
They're fighting for a fair deal - but their right to strike is under threat.
When workers go on strike, the Liberals have used their go-to strike breaking tool: Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code. By using this tool, they let corporations off the hook and force striking members back to work without a fair contract. Last year, just 12 hours after Air Canada flight attendants went on strike, the Lib.
They Liberals have used this strike-breaking tool agains workers everywhere — against striking postal workers, rail workers, dock workers, and more.
An attack on one workers' rights is an attack on every worker.
So much of the progress made throughout Canada's history came because of workers exercising their right to strike, whether that's the liveable wage, the 8-hour workday, or maternity leave.
