The U.S. military action against Venezuela is a clear violation of international law. Canada cannot stand by while sovereign nations are threatened and the UN Charter is ignored. Mark Carney and his Liberal government must reaffirm Canada’s commitment to sovereignty and the rules-based international order.
Article 2(4) of the UN Charter prohibits the use or threat of force against another state, except in cases of self-defence or with authorization from the UN Security Council. The United States’ actions against Venezuela earlier this week meet neither standard, making them a clear violation of international law.
In moments like these, Canada cannot selectively apply the rules-based international order. If we believe international law matters, it must matter in all cases — regardless of which country is responsible or who is in power.
New Democrats are calling on the Liberal government to take a strong, principled position: to oppose illegal uses of force and to clearly affirm Venezuela’s sovereignty and the UN Charter.
When one state’s sovereignty is violated and the rules-based international order is ignored, it puts all countries and their citizens at risk. Allowing this dangerous precedent to stand invites further violations and completely undermines global peace and security.
