Demand Affordable Housing for Students

Justin Trudeau’s Housing Crisis has left students struggling to find housing.

Jagmeet’s fighting for every student to have a safe and affordable place to live.

Decades of cuts to Canada’s colleges and universities by Liberal and Conservative governments have created the worst housing crisis for students in living memory.

With just a few weeks to go, students are struggling while Justin Trudeau’s government is nowhere to be seen in making sure students have a safe and affordable place to call home.

Right now, rent is at a record high – the cost of a 1-bedroom in Toronto is over $2,500 a month and $3,000 in Vancouver.

Stand with Jagmeet and the NDP in demanding immediate action to help students in desperate need.

Jagmeet is fighting to build more housing for students, faster by:

    • Establishing an initiative whereby the federal government matches its funding with provinces and territories and post-secondary institutions for the construction of new affordable student housing so that the cost is split equally between all contributors.
    • Coordinating the allocation of study permits to post-secondary institutions that can demonstrate they have a credible and affordable student housing plan
    • Incentivizing partnership opportunities between businesses, non-profits, and post-secondary institutions to convert existing empty office spaces to residential use, including dormitory-style student housing.
